The Adventures of Gem'Quila
This was the project I worked on during the spring lockdown of 2020. It was my most amibitous project so far. Many mistakes were made and much stuff was learned...
I still feel quite constrained by what I know how to do in Blender, the next things I really need to learn are retopo in characters to I can shape key animated them better and landscapes. I have no idea how to make a large but detailed landscape in Blender, so that's something to learn.

Some "Making Of" Pics
The Grifter is Gem's battered old space frieghter that is destroyed at the start of the film. While making this model I realized I'd been hooking up the shaders incorrectly on all my previous projects. Its nice when everything is hooked up correctly and works as you expect.
A first attempt at the great outdoors. I had all kinds of weird clipping issues and shadow problems. I think my approach was wrong. This is one area where video game engines definitely do shine as they are designed for this sort of thing. Because I couldn't get a landscape working I was happy with I ended using some photos I'd shot previously in the desert but obviously those locked me to a fixed camera which made telling the story harder than I had anticipated.
Cem in all his green skinned glory... He's not even close to being an animatable character. He needs some serious retopology to his face and shoulders. You can kind of see I designed him like an action figure. His armor isn't really attached to head or his arms.
